ETC: Main Stage

Begun in 1999 with a production of Bottom's Dream, a bilingual Spanish/English adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream, ETC Main Stage works with elementary, middle and high school students to create original plays and musicals based on classic works of literature and drama. During an intensive eight or nine week residency, students work with ETC's professional Teaching Artists to develp the script, compose song lyrics, design and create costumes, props and other scenic elements. During the last three weeks of the residency, students begin a professional rehearsal process culminating in a performance for their community.

"The Main Stage program at ETC is designed to integrate the arts in a holistic manner using literature or historical events as a springboard for performance. By directing the students to create as an ensemble, where everyone's contribution is equally valued and needed, this student production not only provides instruction in arts disciplines such as vocal music, composition, playwrighting, design, and dance, but also provides life-long lessons such as collaboration, creative resourcing, and idea expansion."

-Elena Velasco, ETC Teaching Artist

Since its inception, ETC Main Stage has produced 36 new musicals and plays at 13 locations throughout the National Capital Area.
